Use of Teeth Bleaching Products

Using teeth bleaching products is an ideal way to whiten the teeth. They come in different forms. They can be purchased over the counter or obtained from dentists. For those not sure whether to purchase over-the-counter teeth bleaching products or those provided by dentists, you should be aware that there are differences between the two and you should consider them carefully before making a decision. Here are some considerations:

* Potency of the teeth whitening agent

Over the counter teeth bleaching products often contain lower whitening ingredients than the ones applied by dentists. Both whitening products contain peroxide but the ones that dentists use is stronger and more efficient and the results are more visible than over the counter ones.

* Mouthpiece trays

Teeth bleaching products often require the use of mouthpiece trays. Over the counter whitening kits have mouthpiece trays included but are one size fits all, meaning that the tray will not perfectly fit the mouth. If this happens, the whitening gel will not cover the entire teeth that needs to be bleached as well as it will contact with the gums causing irritation. For a dentist managed whitening procedure, a dental patient will obtain a customized mouthpiece tray that will fit perfectly. A perfectly fit tray can cover the entire teeth that need to be whitened without having the gums irritated.

* Safety measures

With a dentist supervised treatment, a dental patient can be sure that he or she will receive safe medication while over the counter teeth bleaching products do not offer protective instruments. For example, the dentist normally uses gel to the gums or a protective shield made of rubber when applying bleach to the teeth, avoiding the risks of gum ulcers and other gum irritations.

* Cost

Over the counter teeth whitening products are way more inexpensive than dentist managed whitening products. Over the counter bleaching products normally costs $20 to $100 while for a dentist managed product would cost around $300 per set of teeth or $600 for the entire set of teeth. This includes the products used, facilities and of course the professional fee.

Over the counter teeth bleaching products are also not approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). Overall, dentist managed whitening products have more advantages than over the counter ones. However it would still depend on the individual's choice. Should a dental patient go to a dentist, that person should make sure that the products that the dentist will use have the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance.
